2025 FRSP Nature Center Check Presentation

On Thursday, August 21, the Friends of Reid State Park met with State Park officials to present a check in the amount of $11,214 to support the development of a Nature Center at Griffith's Head in the old concessions building. These funds were the result of generous donations from many Reid lovers and a $5,000 match from FRSP. Representatives of the state included: Amanda Beal, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry (DACF); Haylee Parsons, Park Manager; Andy Cutko, Director of the Bureau of Parks and Lands; Gary Best, Southern Regional Parks Manager, and Jim Britt, Director of Communications at DACF. Katie Langley of the Maine Trust for Local News/Times-Record covered the event. This link goes to a video of part of the presentation ceremony.

2024 Storm Clean Ups

Storm Clean Up--June 17, 2024

Linda Dapp and her daughter, Christine Summa (pictured), traveled from Connecticut just to be there for this event. They have a strong and special connection to Reid State Park. Linda is Walter Reid’s great granddaughter. As I’m sure you know, the park is named for this man who made the creation of the park possible. Linda answered a question I’ve been asking for years. You may have seen the little camp that sits right by the shore at the outflow of the lagoon. It was Walter’s hunting camp for sea ducks. It has a sign on it that says “Kilkare”. I always thought it might be a town in Ireland where his ancestors lived. What it really means is “Kill with Care”, reflecting Walter’s respect for the environment and the waterfowl that he took.
